Reason for nomination:

  • This ancient tree is one of a line of 10 magnificent veteran trees which stand on the Roding valley recreation ground north of Roding Lane. They once formed an old hedgeline and are all that remains following the expansion of Buckhurst Hill in the 1930s. Of the line, 8 are hornbeams, which are easily the most impressive collection of hornbeam pollards recorded to date. We are estimating this tree to be around 400 years old, judgeing by its size and decay features. Its is the joint second largest hornbeam pollard recorded outside of Epping Forest.

Remarks & Tree condition:

  • Height 13.80m.
