Reason for nomination:

  • “Before Dutch Elm disease swept through the village, Nazeing boasted numerous majestic Elms whose loss changed the face of the landscape. The preservation of the Oak is paramount without them the village would be almost devoid of large deciduous native trees. Chris Neilan of Epping Forest District Council passed favourable comment on this Oak when he inspected the churchyard trees several years ago. Although there is evidence to the contrary the headland where the church stands gave the village its name. “Naze” means “a spur” and “ing” means “dwellers at” Desmond Day.

Remarks & Tree condition:

  • This tree is situated on the right about 50m up from the entrance to the church grounds next to the car park. Look out for the row of pollarded Chestnut trees as you walk past.
